Organizational Structure/ Job Classification

Lessons learned from OJT Experience

OJT or On-Job-Training is the activity of the students wherein they are trained or prepared to a certain job or career. It is also a requirement of a course before graduation. The students are assigned in different branches of government or private offices wherein they are assigned or perform their work to prepare and exposed themselves to a chosen career. On-the-Job Training is a combination of learning yet fun experience. Through an On-the-Job Training, students can practice what character should they manifest when they are inside the industry. It will generally help the students to brought out their productivity and capability. Also, it will characterize their selves to become a young professional. From the very beginning, it is a tough decision of choosing what company should I conduct my OJT. Of course, the company where I can apply my knowledge at the same time learning a lot should be my priority when choosing.
It is really a great start last February 4 of this year. I together with my two other co-trainees undergo our On-the-Job Training. It was a combination of excitement and nervous for me. Excitement because I will be in a different environment for the next three months. Nervous because adjustments might happen. New people to interact with and new environment to adapt. My first day was okay. At first, I am still coping to a new environment with new people. S-Corp Company is one of the Data Entry and Call Center company in Subic Bay Freeport Zone. I am not that familiar to them that is why I need to adjust. On my day one, the company’s personnel made us familiar with the working environment. They explain the overall duties and process that is happening in the company. They let us see the different IT equipment that the company has. For my first task, I was assigned to do a layout of the company’s floorplan through an AutoCAD process. Also, they asked us to crimped the LAN cables. The person who is in charge of teaching me is Ms. Ana Glecie Alvarez. She taught us things that should be learned as an IT in a certain company. For the next task, I was assigned to inspect, troubleshoot and assemble a desktop computer. This is because S-Corp has a lot of unused and broken desktop computers. I find this task challenging, this is because when I was in 1st year we were taught in one of our subjects, PC troubleshooting. Another is that it makes me think again the knowledge that I learned in PC Assembly and Disassembly. For the next days, we started installing softwares on the different rooms in S-CORP. These softwares are all confidential so the mobile phones are not allowed inside the data entry and call center rooms.
During my stay in S-Corp, I have developed as a trainee to follow strictly on instructions to ensure that the process is properly sequence. Ask question, if required, to clarify your understanding about things and this prevent you for incurring errors. I can say that I gained to work effectively and competently in the organization. I improve my self confidence in socializing to people. I have the initiative in doing something. I’ve learned to be flexible, because culture is always changing, so impacting the business model and corporate culture as well. In my 500 hours of On-the-Job Training, I can say that the course I enrolled is exactly where I want and I will probably stay in this profession for as long job opportunities are present.
As a student of Gordon College, where all the skills that are being applied to S-Corp learned, I see myself years from now being a responsible one, intelligent and independent young IT professional with a stable job. Working in a respectable company who I can contribute my learnings. I will be an asset to the company which I work with. The one that helps to the growth of the organization. Either having my own where I can use all the knowledge from my academe plus the experience gathered from the company. Having a strong academic knowledge given by Gordon College I see myself fulfilling my dreams in the future.

People Met and dealt with
It is important to become socially active while you were in the working environment. From the people in the company, especially those that stays for too long, I can say that I learn a lot as an OJT. While I was in S-Corp, there are a lot of people to whom I learned a lot. In HR Department, Ms. Ana Glecie Alvarez, Ms. Euchabel Unating and Ms. Emily Bundang. They were the one who conducted the interview when I was applying as a Trainee. Also, they let me know the company’s background and even its rules and regulation.
Another is Mr. Erwin Ray Regalado, who works as a Technical Support Engineer. I find him, a hardworking and kind person. He is too reliable when it comes to problems that is occurring in the company. He immediately complies to the needs of the projects and departments of S-Corp. From him, I learned such things in networking like operating their system, troubleshooting and installing softwares.
Also, we met the S-Corp’s General Manager, Ms. Yvette Dasmarinas. Clearly, she treated us in a very good way. For our first day, she lets us meet the personnel of IT department and introduced us to them. She makes us feel like her own child whenever she teaches us. During our OJT, she brings us food especially when we accomplished task.

IT Skills Learned and implemented
One of the projects that was assigned to me is to create and design a floorplan for     S-CORP PHILS. INC. Doing this project is to enhance my knowledge and skills for creating floorplan. My background in AutoCAD was also very useful to us in terms of designing and layout. We also conducted PC Assembly for the company. Most of the computers not functional and technical error that is why we troubleshoot and fixed it and to make functional.

Problems encountered and solutions applied
During our 2 months of stay in S-CORP, I have encountered problem in troubleshooting. One of the computers is very slow and hang so I fix the problem simply by cleaning the hard drive of unwanted files and I also installed anti-virus and anti-spyware tools. I learned from those problem and I learned to find ways on how can I solve those problems.  Because in the real-world there are always problems on our way and solved. We just have to be patient and positive-minded.

Recommendations/Suggestions to improve the practicum program
I would suggest to future trainees should find a company that experience the job descriptions that they will be performing on their future job and to bring out their skills and knowledge in the other employees. The school and the company partner should have a proper agreement about the functions of the students in the workplace area.
